Jetpacks and Time Machines

Jetpacks and Time Machines (JP&TM) is a semi-sci fi comic featuring a partially robotic boy, a boy-genius with a penchant for villainy, a violent monkey, a retired supervillain, a nature hating nature show host, and anything else I can think of. Update Schedule Pending.

The adventure continues…

If all goes according to plan, these next few strips are going to really start testing both my narrative and artistic abilities.

Sketchbook – Keeping it Loose

New comic will be posted friday.  Until then, more sketches.

This page is all about keeping the drawing loose.  Lately I’ve been really trying for expressive lines, gesture, and movement in my drawing.  Not that I’m trying to get away from or am against tight technical work… but I think there needs to be a balance of both (in my work anyways.)

Also, looseness helps the production speed.

Still in the Sand

Well, it continues.  As always, if you’re new here, the kite storyline begins right here.

In this strip, Adam’s adventure continues, with a (I hope) clearly illustrated path of destruction.

On the technical side, I’m afraid my perspective might be a bit wonky in the first panel… although it’s tough to say, since it’s supposed to be sort of a fish-eye style anyways.  Frickin’ perspective still causes me trouble.

The Wind Picks Up

The Wind Picks Up

Before I go any farther, for those of you that need a refresher on the storyline, please feel free to start at the beginning.

First comic back, and now it’s time to stretch the old “artist description” muscles.  To be honest, my primary goal with this comic, was to pick up where the storyline left off, without embarrassing myself too badly.  Hopefully I achieved both, but we’ll see.

Aside from that overachiever-level goal, I’d also like to think that this comic represents what I hope will  be the new, more narrative focused JP&TM.  Not that I’m suggesting that this comic is breaking some sort of narrative ground or anything, but I’m hoping that in the coming weeks, everyone will start to notice a much more cohesive storytelling focus.

On the technical side, I am willing to admit that perhaps I might have fallen back to my old ways and over-rendered the sandcastle slightly, but I’m hoping that’s offset by the flow of the fourth and fifth panels.

Either way, it feels good to be back, even in a slightly reduced capacity (it’s only going to be a comic a week until further notice) and I look forward to continuing to flex my comicing muscles.

This past week I made another visit to Comics Coast to Coast, in an attempt to convince Justin Thompson that not only can he or anybody else set up a comic website, but that it’s also a worthwhile endeavor. I’m not sure if I was successful or not.

Having set up and altered a comic press site or two (or a bunch, and sometimes dramatically altered them) I did my best to help Brian explain as many of the nuts and bolt of setting up a site as we could, and I think we covered a lot of ground. That being said, if any would be cartoonist/webmasters out there have any questions, feel free to ask. You can email me at jim (AT) jetpacksandtimemachines.com

Another Day, Another Sketch

Another Day, Another Sketch

What we have here, is a design for Adam’s dad, a drawing of The Announcer, a couple experiments with smaller character designs to see what clearly shows up on screen and what doesn’t, and at bottom right, a couple of characters that’ll be making appearances in the new comics (one of which will hopefully be coming out next week.)

That’s right, I plan on producing a new comic next week. Hopefully it’ll be appearing on wednesday.
