Sketchbook - Adam’s Dad

No joke, just doing a little character redesigning maybe. I’ve never been happy with the character of Adam’s dad… Adam’s dad was the character that I designed without actually designing him, and what I mean is that I wrote a joke that needed the dad, and I decided to just draw him without any of my usual planning, but now that I have some new jokes coming up that involve a greater dad presence, I feel I need to rectify the situation.

Basically, what you’re all looking at are the usual sketches I do while trying to figure out what it is that I’m doing with the character. I fool around with facial structure, proportion, and possible robotic parts. I haven’t yet decided what changes to implement. Basically, now is your time as readers to weigh in if you want… Or not. It’s cool either way.

how menacing of a character do you plan “dad” to be? Is he evil like Grandpa or more of a everyday dad?

  2. Kevin

I like the idea of adding more robotic parts. Not to insult your strip, but I really enjoyed seeing the sketches in place of a strip (I would have preferred it in addition to a strip). I like seeing what other artists go through in the development process.

@wit:I figure Adam’s dad is not as menacing as grandpa, but far more crackpot than the average dad.

@Kevin: Yeah, I’d started to forget the fact that the whole point of my starting this website was not to keep producing a daily comic strip, but rather to develop on hone my comic creating abilities, and figure out what I’m doing with my strip… but I’d been getting away from that for a while, and I want to get back to it.

I don’t know why but I’m feeling a robotic helper more than robotic appendage…not sure why, but that’s my weird gut-feelingy 2 cents.

As always, love the strip and especially monkey-induced antics.

I really like a combination of some of the figures… The jetpack looks really cool and i like the pointy hairdo of the fourth guy on the right. Body type is not really an issue for me but thats what i would like to see on Adams dad.

Those are my 2 cents worth. lol, just saw Alex’s quote of his 2 cents so now you have 4 more…

    lame joke. My bad

Thanks for the four cents guys! (Although I do prefer higher denominations usually.)

Lets see… Pointy hairdos, a robotic helper, and a jetpack… Got it. I’ll take that into consideration.

I think he should have some robot parts, just so that he looks more like Adam. I kind of like the little face on the far right (under the guy wearing boots). My two cents, for whatever it’s worth (yes, I know it’s worth two cents).

  8. jim (JP&TM creator)

Yeah, I agree Theresa… I’ve been leaning towards some sort of robot part… Not sure what yet though, but it would help tie him in with adam.

  9. Doug

Hi, Jim. Thanks for including us in your creative process. I kinda like the dude fifth from the left with the high forehead and goatee. Looks rather cool and intelligent in a “dad” kind of way. Robotics are always a good idea for that future look, but are they hereditary? Why IS Adam a cyborg anyway? Accident? Evil experiment that went horribly wrong? Lifestyle choice? I guess the answers may be found in future strips. LOL, “future”, geddit? Go on, just slap me.

  10. me! (pd guy)

Careful with that “slap me” offer, Doug. Jim tried to email me a punch in the face yesterday. Damn sensitive cartoonists. A real “pain in the rear wheel” if you know what I mean.

  11. MJ

Like the sketchwork. Trying to play the catch up game.

  12. jim (JP&TM creator)

@Doug: Nah, robotics aren’t hereditary, but but they’d help to visually tie everything together I think. As for Adam’s story, I haven’t gone into it yet.

@Me!: I just said I wanted to find a way to email my fist to your face, but I suppose I’ll have to just go with the old fashion snail mail bomb… uh, I mean, I hope you enjoy the cookies I sent.

@MJ: Oh man… you’re lucky I haven’t been doing a great job of keeping up my production.

I dunno, I really like the one on the far left. He’s got the robotic parts like Adam, and he looks sort of approachable and avuncular, like a dad ought to, though with a hint of mad scientist about him. I think most of the others look a bit too mean/evil.

But, y’know, like everyone else, I just got two pennies in my pocket, rubbing up against each other. ‘Taint much.

  14. Eric

Kind of late, but my $.02 is that I think that you are on the right track with the hair. Nothing says “crackpot” like out-of-control hair.

  15. Jarrett

I like the farthest , farthest , farthest one on the right. That one with a robot hand would be great.

  16. jim (JP&TM creator)

Thanks for the pocket change! I like the out of control hair and robot parts. As for the face… That’s gonna be tricky. I need a face that’s not too menacing looking, but will be on occasion.
